The hike to Machu Picchu Mountain is a unique adventure that takes visitors to the highest point within the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, offering breathtaking views of the ancient Inca citadel and the surrounding Andes Mountains. This scenic route follows original Inca stone pathways and provides a quieter and more exclusive experience compared to other hikes inside the sanctuary.
Accompanied by a professional private guide, this excursion guarantees a safe, personalized, and memorable journey that combines history, nature, and spectacular landscapes in one of the world’s most iconic destinations.
The citadel of Machu Picchu was built around 1450 AD during the reign of Emperor Pachacutec, one of the most influential rulers of the Inca Empire. The Incas carefully selected this extraordinary location, surrounded by towering mountains, the Vilcanota River valley, and the lush cloud forest vegetation typical of the Cusco region. In this remarkable setting, they created one of the world’s most admired archaeological masterpieces.
In 2007, Machu Picchu was officially recognized as one of the New Seven Wonders of the Modern World because of its historical importance, stunning scenery, and incredible hiking experiences available to travelers.
Hiking Routes in Machu Picchu
Inside the sanctuary, there are six official hiking routes designed for different fitness levels and travel styles:
Machu Picchu Mountain Excursion
Machu Picchu Mountain reaches an elevation of approximately 3,082 meters above sea level (10,111 feet), making it the highest point within the archaeological complex. This mountain also gave its name to the entire sanctuary long before its modern rediscovery.
The trail to the summit covers around 2.5 kilometers (1.55 miles) and usually takes about two hours to reach the top. Along the way, hikers follow ancient and well-preserved Inca stone steps surrounded by spectacular Andean scenery.

The private service begins when the traveler is met at the train station in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). Upon exiting the station, your guide or a member of our team will accompany you to the bus station to board the shuttle bus heading to the main entrance of Machu Picchu.
If the traveler stays overnight in Aguas Calientes, the guide may also provide a short briefing at the hotel before the experience begins. This introduction helps travelers better understand the hike and the overall experience at Machu Picchu Mountain.
The bus ride from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu takes approximately 30 minutes and is not included in the private guide service.
Once at the main entrance, you will meet your professional private guide. The Machu Picchu + Mountain ticket includes two official entry times: 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.
After entering the sanctuary, you will walk along original Inca stone paths, passing agricultural terraces and ceremonial areas until reaching the famous Guardian’s House. From this viewpoint, you will enjoy one of the most iconic panoramic views of Machu Picchu, making it the perfect location for unforgettable photographs.
After spending time at this classic viewpoint, you will continue the ascent toward the entrance of Machu Picchu Mountain. From there, the main hike begins with your guide, who will share detailed information about the history, natural environment, and cultural importance of this impressive site.
Throughout the hike, your private guide will focus on your safety, help you capture the best photographs, and gladly answer all your questions. The guided experience lasts approximately 5 hours round trip.
At the end of the hike, you will descend back to the exit gate of Machu Picchu, where the private guide service concludes. Afterward, you will board the bus back to Aguas Calientes.
